Chapter 1187: Chapter 1187: Extra Story of the Eel 24
When she was little, she didn’t think much about it, but as she grew older, her situation became increasingly awkward–
she couldn’t seamlessly fit in with the girls, nor could she freely buddy up with the boys, arms slung over shoulders like close brothers.
She didn’t like dwelling on these things; it always felt pretentious. She didn’t want to tell her parents that apart from Li Li, she had no other friends, because saying it made no difference–friends aren’t something you can conjure up just by talking about them.
Su Man and Lu Yuwen walked back.
She asked, “Just now when I heard you talking to my parents about the branch store, is coming to Shanghai all about handling that?”
Lu Yuwen glanced at her and replied, “Yes, but also no.”
“Why the mystery?” Su Man couldn’t help but smile. “If there’s anything you need help with, make sure to let us know. Our family will do everything we can to assist you.”
Lu Yuwen had a faint smile on his lips as he unhurriedly said, “Originally, I just wanted to come by and have a look, but after arriving, I suddenly realized I couldn’t leave for now. So I decided to open a branch store–figured it’d make staying here feel more natural.”
His words were somewhat cryptic. What did he mean by “suddenly realized I couldn’t leave for now”? And what did “make staying here feel more natural” mean?
It seemed like he was hinting at something…
Yet Su Man felt she might be overthinking it. She wasn’t particularly clever, and any attempt to guess at someone else’s thoughts only made her more confused.
If it turned out to be wishful thinking… how embarrassing would that be?
Su Man pondered silently, saying nothing.
The walk to the hospital room only took a few steps. When they reached the door, Lu Yuwen graciously took the lead and grabbed the doorknob, ready to open the door for her.
Inside, Su Family’s parents could be heard speaking animatedly.
Lu Yuwen paused mid-action.
“I just can’t stand it. What on earth do they mean by this? They know perfectly well what’s going on between their Li Li and our Manman, yet she still says something like that in front of us!”
That was Su Mom’s voice.
Then Su Dad calmly tried to placate her, “She didn’t say much. She just came to visit me, and the topic of the award ceremony came up. Things got carried away because she got excited. She’s happy for her child–it doesn’t mean anything else. You’re overthinking it…”
Su Mom snorted coldly, saying, “Oh, sure! All you ever do is blame me for overthinking. Why don’t you blame them for not thinking things through properly? Yeah, sure–it’s easy for them; they’ve got a son. It’s not like they stand to lose anything, so of course they don’t care!”
“Come on now… They’re just people we’ve seen raising their kids alongside ours. Manman isn’t going to suffer from any kind of loss, is she?”
“Then what did she mean by what she said today? Talking about how excellent her son is, winning awards, and how a line of female students were fighting to take pictures with Li Li! Her husband, Old Li, was grinning ear to ear, not seeing anything wrong with it. If they truly considered Manman as their future daughter-in-law, would they say something like that in front of us?”
“They were just happy. You’re overthinking, seriously…”
“You! Every single day, you don’t think about this, you don’t think about that–what exactly is that thing placed above your neck for?”
“We were having a nice conversation, why’d you have to start hurling insults…”
…
Su Man stood frozen in place outside the door. At first, her face burned with embarrassment, but slowly she calmed down, her heart cooled as if dipped in icy water.
Lu Yuwen, still holding the doorknob, lowered his gaze to look at her. The dispute inside showed no signs of ending. He thought for a moment and then softly suggested, “Let’s go downstairs for a walk.”
Su Man nodded silently, turned, and walked away without a word.
Lu Yuwen followed behind, accompanying her down the stairs.
Occasionally, patients or nurses passed them by. Su Man descended flight after flight, but still didn’t speak.

Lu Yuwen quickened his pace, catching up to walk alongside her. His tone was gentle as he said, “Parents worry about their children almost instinctively. It doesn’t mean anything else.”
“I know…” Su Man forced a smile. “It’s fine. My mom always talks like that. I’m used to it.”
Lu Yuwen walked alongside her for a while before speaking again. “Then why are you unhappy? Is it because… you like him?”
Su Man suddenly froze in her tracks.
Lu Yuwen stopped too. He studied her expression, and without realizing it, felt a slight tension creeping in.
