Chapter 1816: Chapter 775: Pangolin (Part 2)

Wang Tao signaled the pangolin to jump onto the back of the golden eagle, and then flew with it to the previous cave.

“This is the place, can you dig down?”

The cave was filled with many rocks and digging wouldn’t be as easy as in other places. However, the pangolin was confident that it could handle it. If it couldn’t tackle even these rocks, how could it call itself a pangolin?

“Since you think it’s not a problem, then go ahead and start digging. I’ll keep my promise and get you some food. What do you usually eat?”

Wang Tao knew that pangolins ate termites, but he didn’t know where to find them. He figured the pangolin couldn’t survive on just one type of food, especially since it had mutated. Otherwise, it would starve to death.

The pangolin immediately stated that it didn’t just eat termites. It ate all kinds of insects, including bees and honey.

“Insects, huh…”

Wang Tao frowned. Although insects were more common than termites, getting a large number of them quickly wasn’t easy. As for honey, that was more manageable since there were beekeepers in the Hongfeng Base, where he’d seen plenty of bees before.

At this moment, the pangolin suddenly licked its long, thin tongue and told Wang Tao it knew where to find insect nests, even those of mutated insects. But those insects moved in swarms, and it couldn’t handle them on its own.

“Alright, then start digging while I go fetch you some food!”

Wang Tao nodded and left with the golden eagle, leaving the pangolin behind.

Seeing Wang Tao and the others leave, the pangolin’s small eyes darted around. If it escaped now, wouldn’t it gain its freedom?

It was tempted but remembered Wang Tao’s terrifying strength, which scared it. If caught, it would be doomed.

Moreover, Wang Tao claimed he was getting food for it. If he really provided food, then losing its freedom wouldn’t be a big deal. Digging was as easy for it as walking…

Eventually, the pangolin decided to wait and see if Wang Tao kept his word. If he did, it would follow him. If he lied, as long as it wasn’t dead, there would be a chance to escape. After all, once it dug deep underground, not even a fifth-level human could stop it from fleeing!

In the sky, feeling the pangolin’s aura hadn’t vanished, Wang Tao nodded with satisfaction.

“Smart move on your part… Let’s go get it some food!”

Wang Tao didn’t want to enslave the pangolin, nor did he have the means. He wanted the pangolin to cooperate with him like Lightning and the golden eagle, becoming a partner. Thus, he was determined to keep his promises.

Before long, the golden eagle carried Wang Tao, Lightning, and Taxue to one of the locations the pangolin had mentioned.

Seeing the swarm of unknown insects below, Wang Tao felt a prickle of goosebumps.

The insects seemed to sense the golden eagle above, raising their heads and making unsettling noises.

Their leader also emerged, a Level 4 Lord.

[HP: 600000/60000]

[Mana: 300000/300000]

[Grade: Level 4 – Lord]

[Awakening: Spray Poison Gas]

[Spray Poison Gas: Can emit highly toxic gas]

Noticing this Level 4 Lord’s attributes, Wang Tao understood why the pangolin couldn’t beat them. Though covered in scales and able to roll into a ball for defense, its high defense might not work against these venomous insects.

This could be a troublesome issue for the pangolin, but it was hardly a problem for Wang Tao. From a distance, he launched two heat energy beams, instantly wiping out a large number of insects.

The Lord screeched at Wang Tao, spraying poison gas from its mouth. But it was too far away to harm Wang Tao. Wang Tao fired two more heat energy beams, leaving the Level 4 Lord defenseless and killing it instantly.

With the Lord dead, the remaining insects fell into chaos. Wang Tao killed a few more but didn’t eliminate them all. He noticed many insect eggs in the nest, indicating more insects could hatch. No need for total annihilation; they could provide the pangolin with food for a long time!

These insects were quite large anyway, and the dead ones should be enough to feed the pangolin.

Wang Tao descended and quickly gathered the dead insects and spoils of war before flying back to the cave.

Outside the cave, Wang Tao couldn’t sense the pangolin’s presence anymore, but Lightning confirmed it was still inside, just deeper down.

He went in and found a sloping hole leading downward. Although called a small hole, the mutant pangolin’s body wasn’t small, and it had even considered making the hole big enough for Wang Tao to enter.

Standing at the entrance, Wang Tao was about to call for it when he heard rustling sounds, and the pangolin came running out.

Without further ado, Wang Tao tossed a huge pile of insects onto the ground. The pangolin’s eyes lit up at the sight. It had long wanted to eat these venomous insects but never managed to defeat their Lord. At last, it could enjoy them, even their Lord!

“Squeak~”

The pangolin expressed its gratitude right away. Since Wang Tao kept his promise, it would honor its own agreement and follow him. Digging for food would be more comfortable than its days in the wild!

However, the pangolin also told Wang Tao that the deeper it dug, the harder it became. Even though it had dug through many underground rocks since mutating, it had never encountered such tough conditions before… Of course, it rarely dug straight down, so it wasn’t sure if other places were the same.

Wang Tao raised an eyebrow at this.

The more unusual it was, the more likely he was to find something valuable!

So he instructed the pangolin to keep digging and to run back if it sensed danger.

While there wasn’t any destruction-level threat yet, the creatures before ascension to that level certainly weren’t weak. If they emerged, the pangolin might not stand a chance…

The pangolin then suddenly told Wang Tao it had some companions. Did he want them to join as well?

Even though pangolins were solitary, the mutated ones had connections due to their newfound intelligence.

“You have companions? Great, call them over. They’ll have similar benefits to yours; I’ll ensure you all are well-fed and cared for!”

Wang Tao was overjoyed. One pangolin might be slow, but several could greatly improve efficiency.

Then, as if thinking of something, he suddenly added:

“Oh right, my name is Wang Tao. I’ll give you a name — let’s call you Little Jia!”

“Squeak~”

The pangolin replied with a squeak, then happily ran off to gather its companions.

Wang Tao felt confident the pangolin wasn’t deceiving him. So he returned to Hongfeng Base, obtained some honey from Han Youlin, and planned to treat the pangolins to a better meal later.

Returning to the cave, Wang Tao waited about three hours. Just when he started to doubt himself, Little Jia returned with a group of over ten pangolins, varying in size. The weakest was Level Two, most were Level Three, and there were even two Level Fours. However, most were elites, with only three at the Lord Rank, including Little Jia.

But that was enough for Wang Tao since they were only needed for digging, not fighting.

Wang Tao brought out a large supply of insects and honey, letting them have a hearty meal. Without needing instructions, Little Jia led the group of pangolins down into the cave to start working.
